Google is currently trying out a new feature called “Speaking practice” in its Search platform, which is designed to assist users in enhancing their ability to speak English conversationally. This feature is being tested with English learners in countries like Argentina, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and Venezuela who are part of Search Labs, a program that allows users to test out new Google Search features in their early stages.

The company aims to enhance users’ English proficiency through interactive language learning activities utilizing AI technology. This will help users practice using new words in practical situations.

Google introduced a new feature last October to assist English learners in enhancing their skills. This feature allows users to practice speaking sentences in context and receive feedback on grammar and clarity. The new Speaking practice feature takes it a step further by incorporating back and forth conversational practice.

In speaking practice, the user is prompted with a question to respond to using certain words. For example, the AI may ask the user how they can improve their fitness, requiring the user to include the words “exercise,” “heart,” and “tired” in their response.

The purpose of this feature is to assist individuals learning English in engaging in conversations in the language and mastering the correct usage of various words.

The introduction of the new feature suggests that Google may be preparing to compete with language learning apps such as Duolingo and Babbel. Google has previously explored language learning and educational tools, as seen in 2019 when they launched a feature that helped Search users practice correct pronunciation of words.
