North Korean hackers targeted defense companies in South Korea in a major cyberattack campaign. Chinese and Russian hackers are increasingly using zero-day vulnerabilities and edge device attacks in cybercrime tactics. Security flaws in Chinese keyboard apps have put over 1 billion users at risk. Apple's focus on generative AI suggests a shift towards running AI directly on its devices.

A group of researchers at Apple unveiled OpenELM, a collection of four small language models that can be found in the Hugging Face model library. Apple describes OpenELM as a set of efficient language models that perform well in text-related tasks like composing emails. These models are open source and can be used by developers.

OpenELM is more compact than other lightweight AI models in terms of size.

Models come in four different sizes: 270 million parameters, 450 million parameters, 1.1 billion parameters, and 3 billion parameters. Parameters are the elements that a model relies on to make choices using the information it has been trained on. For example, Microsoft's Phi-3 model has at least 3.8 billion parameters, while Google's Gemma model has a version with 2 billion parameters. Smaller models are more affordable to use and are created to work effectively on devices like smartphones and laptops.

Tim Cook, who is the CEO of Apple, suggested that Apple's devices will soon incorporate generative AI capabilities. He stated in February that Apple is dedicating significant time and resources to developing this technology. However, Apple has not disclosed specific details about their plans for implementing AI.

The company has revealed various AI models in the past, but has not yet launched a core AI model for commercial purposes as its rivals have.

In December, Apple launched MLX, a machine learning framework created to enhance the efficiency of AI models on Apple Silicon. They also presented MGIE, an image editing model that guides users in editing photos through prompts. Furthermore, they released Ferret-UI, a tool designed to aid users in navigating their smartphones. There are speculations that Apple is working on a code completion tool that is similar to GitHub's Copilot.

Apple, despite launching several models, has asked for help from Google and OpenAI to integrate their models into Apple products.
