There is a common theme among MSP’s, that there is no money in the small business market, and additionally it’s a pain, and not worth their time. Unfortunately there is some truth to this. In most cases small businesses lack the budget needed for proper outsourcing. They often want to be educated and trained while the MSP’s does their job. There is also a general lack of understanding of the business model. This usually leads to an over expectation of what the MSP is actually responsible for. All of this leads to the perception that the small business market is “twice the work for half the money”. Thus, it has become underserved, with some exceptions.
This market has the most to gain, especially since Covid, let’s take a closer look. In addition to many businesses increasing their amount of remote workers. There has been an increase in home businesses in general. At the same time malware and phishing attacks are increasing worldwide, America being the number 1 target. Many owners try to bite more than they can chew. The Cyber landscape as a whole can be quite daunting and difficult to navigate.
There are many products and services available. Most offerings coming from Internet service providers and anti-virus suites. These products only cover a portion of what a business needs, and it’s worth mentioning that many of those companies themselves have been victims of attacks. While most owners know all of this, what eludes them is what is missing, and how to make informed decisions on everything else.
So what is everything else? If we “assume” that the virus suite, and the ISP’s have done their job. There are still many concerns that need to be addressed. Such as what to do if your business is a victim of a cyber attack, what are your legal responsibilities, and/or liabilities. Can employees be held liable, are they trained, what if damage is the result of an employee. Does your business need a NOC or a SOC, and how secure are remote workers. In general how confident are you that your business can survive a cyber incident?
