How FoodTech Startup Fay is Revolutionizing Nutritional Counseling with Insurance Coverage

Sammy Faycurry has been listening to his mom and sister, who are dieticians, talk about the poor eating habits of many Americans and the challenges they face in providing nutritional advice. This has inspired him to explore opportunities in the food

Even though many adults in the country suffer from chronic conditions related to poor eating habits, there is a shortage of in-network registered dieticians available through health plans.

Faycurry made the decision to create a platform that supports registered dietitians (RDs), such as his mother and sister, in launching their own practices with insurance coverage.

While pursuing his MBA at Harvard Business School in 2021, he launched Fay, a foodtech startup that links registered dietitians with insurance providers and clients. After independently funding the project for a year, he invited Mark Stefanski to come on board as the Chief Technology Officer.

Fay, a new startup in the foodtech industry, recently announced its official launch after securing $25 million in funding from investors such as General Catalyst and Forerunner Ventures. Other participants in the funding round included 1984, Grow Therapy, and Maven Clinic founders

Fay has created a franchise model that has become popular among various healthcare providers in recent years. This all-in-one business package is designed for dietitians and therapists, providing them with the necessary resources to manage their practices efficiently. This includes assistance with insurance claims, payment processing, and connecting with patients.

There are other foodtech startups that have adopted a similar business model to Fay. One example is Grow, a platform for therapists that recently secured an $88 million Series C funding round with Sequoia. Another startup, Nourish, also connects registered dietitians with patients and received a $35 million Series A investment in March led by Index Ventures.

At the moment, Fay has a network of 1,000 registered dietitians available on its platform. Users who are insured by Anthem, United Healthcare, Aetna CVS, Blue Cross, Cigna, Optum, Humana, and other insurance companies can access Fay's foodtech services on a weekly or bi-weekly basis for the cost of a standard co-payment.
